Intro to Social Issues Theatre

  • Intro to Social Issues Theatre
    Theatre/Gender & Women's Studies 218
    3 Credit Hours

    This course is an introductory exploration/survey of the rich histories, theories and practices of community-based and social issues theatre. Through discussion, participation, lecture and performance, representative works, movements and artists will be explored. Lively connections will be made to an array of social issues in today’s world.

    • Meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00-2:50pm in the Armory Free Theatre
    • cross listed with Gender and Women’s Studies 218
    • Students are encouraged to continue on with the INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre courses

    This course serves as an exciting gateway to the INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre program here at the University of Illinois. You’ll get a taste of the hands-on creation of community-based theatre creation as well as a broad introduction to some of the history and artists involved in using theatre to address a multitude of social issues.

    Course Description:

    This course focuses on the role of the artist as 'cultural worker' through devising theatre in a community-based context that is explicitly concerned with social and/or health related issues. While there is substantial research, reading and critique involved, the overall experience will be that of rigorously composing theatrical work vital to the community.

    Students should have completed Theatre/Gender and Women's Studies 218 prior to taking this class.

    Introduction and development of facilitation skills and hands on facilitation work with the INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre program.

    • Offered both semesters through the Dept. of Theatre and Gender and Women's Studies

    • Students are encouraged to continue facilitation work with ensemble after completion of course

    This course is an alternative to your run-of-the-mill lecture class! Spend a semester researching and discussing social and health issues and the theatre that addresses them, as well as developing the skills to generate discussions around these issues. You will gain practical experience by facilitating discussions after performances by the INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre Ensemble. Take a class where you can have fun and make a difference!

    You must audition and have permission of instructor to register for this class.  It is recommended that you take Theatre 218 prior to participating in the ensemble

    Focus on a rigorous public performance schedule throughout the campus community
    This course is for students who are committed and available for the creation and performance of social issues theatre

    • Meets Tues., Wed., & Thurs., 5:00-7:00, Armory Free Theatre
